The MONUMENT project (MOre NUrturing and More Empowerment Nested in Technology) is a European Interreg 2 seas project that brings together 11 partners from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

The MONUMENT project aims to provide support to informal caregivers of People Living with Dementia (PLWD), who are still living at home. We do this on the one hand by offering professional and structural support within Odense houses and on the other hand by developing tailor-made technological solutions with caregivers. The project aims to strengthen caregiver resilience so that people living with dementia can continue to live in their own homes. MONUMENT bases its approach on the Dutch Odense houses and enriches this meeting place with technological trials and demonstrations. A digital platform, created by and for informal carers, makes information, support and exchanges accessible remotely.

What are the results of MONUMENT?

The establishment of five sites in the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands where people living with dementia and their carers can receive support based on the ODENSE vision. This includes providing reliable information, supporting informal carers with practical advice and, of course, undertaking leisure activities, such as walks, together.

The creation of a digital platform (website) in English, French, Flemish and Dutch, written by and for informal carers of people living with dementia. The platform offers a wide range of information: information on activities adapted to people living with dementia, interesting books and podcasts, technological tools that can make life easier for carers and feedback on the use of assistive technologies.

Demonstrations of existing assistive technology, such as apps to help structure the day or stay in touch remotely. Caregivers and people living with dementia can experience the technologies in Odense homes or specific focus groups. Based on their experiences, technological solutions will be tailored to meet the needs of people with dementias and their caregivers. The results of the MONUMENT project will be integrated into a feasibility study of the Odense houses. Policymakers and other interested parties can use this information if they plan to set up their own dementia friendly venues.

What are the achievements of the MONUMENT project?

More places in the UK, Belgium, France and the Netherlands will have places to welcome or operate that meet the needs of people living with dementia and their informal carers. This Memo platform contains information such as adapted activities, interesting books and podcasts. The digital platform allows caregivers to share their experiences.

Adapted walking and leisure areas will be created in Norfolk (United Kingdom), where people living with dementia and their carers can have fun together in a pleasant and safe environment. Assistive technology that meets the needs of people living with dementia and their caregivers will be made available. The technology can be tested at the Odensehuis and specific focus groups and will be deployed where needed.

What is the concept of Odense houses?

An Odense House is an accessible meeting place for people living with dementia, their family and friends. Within an Odense house, activities are co-constructed, people support one another, and the sharing of experiences, information and advice is at the heart of the approach. An Odense house is an accessible refuge where participants determine for themselves when they come and what they do. It is a safe place, close to their own household where people living with dementia and their loved ones can feel "at home". Many volunteers are active. Everyone contributes according to their own abilities. At least one professional is present who coordinates, facilitates and supports.

Within Odense House, there is room for meetings, support, activities and advice. Odense House offers support to people living with dementia, but also to their informal caregivers, for example in the form of peer-to-peer support groups. Caregivers share their knowledge and experience. In this way, they support each other and strengthen their own network.
